Discover the Systems, Calculations, and Workshop Setup Needed to Nail Your First Crown Molding Project!!!

Why is crown molding so hard? My dear, let me count the ways.

For starters, you're cutting your trim upside down and backwards! No other trim is cut at a compound angle! If you're a visual learner like me, you can't just breeze through a few articles online and take to the saw like a pro. You need step-by-step, visual guides to help make sense of it all.

Walls are rarely square and ceilings rarely even. To overcome this, you'll need to learn how to use the tools at your disposal. Your crown needs to be consistently positioned on the saw -- and the wall -- correctly for your corners to align.

One more quandary: there are different schools of thought regarding crown positioning in the saw. I've read woodworking books dedicated entirely to the science of cutting flat on the saw, and others that swear by nesting it upside down.

  • When do I need to cope my crown?
  • What is the best coping method?
  • Should I install backer supports to the wall prior to install?

And on it goes.

Friend, crown molding is not your average bear. But that's kind of why we like her. She's complicated...like us.

With the right core strategy and approach, you can safely install crown molding for anything -- from a basic square room to a coffered ceiling. The same basic principles apply.

In this workbook I will share everything that I've learned from a decade of molding mistakes projects cataloged on my DIY blog.

After many, many trips to my garage in what seemed a futile quest of trial and error, one day everything just clicked for me. That was when I felt the magic.

What's Inside:

Section 1: Workshop Prep

Preparation is everything. Arm your workshop with a detailed list of tools, materials, and jigs. In this section we also cover miter saw basics, coping, and spring angles.

Section 2: Space Planning

Learn how to map out your room so you know exactly how much crown molding to buy, the order of your cuts, and which cuts should go in different corners.

Section 3: Installation

In this section I will outline my process for dialing in the miter saw based on your corner measurements. I've also included visual mockups for where to position the crown based on it being an inside vs. outside corner on the right vs. the left.

Section 4: Finish Work

Take your work from DIY to professional by taking extra care to fill in blemishes and other visible flaws.

Section 5: Glossary of Terms

A reference area to support terms used throughout the book.
